A career in the film industry
The Producer's Creative Partnership, in association with international production companies, is always on the look out for experienced crew members or trainees with great potential.
The availability of qualified and experienced crew members in the Maltese islands is limited, especially where positions of responsibility are concerned. It is not the first time that several productions are filming simultaneously in Malta and human resources become quickly exhausted.
The PCP encourages the training of all those who are seriously interested in entering the film industry. On one of our features ("Largo Winch") we engaged no less than eight trainees, some of whom are now either working actively in the industry or went on to study film or media.
The best way to learn from scratch is to work either as a trainee or an office runner. If you already have some basic experience in TV you might be ready to work as a Production Assistant. Sometimes a trainee with no film or TV experience performs so well that he/she gets promoted as a production assistant on the same first production. However such cases are infrequent.
The PCP is interested in receiving your application but only if you are career motivated. Patience, persistence and stamina are other attributes needed since the film servicing industry in Malta can at times be unpredictable and opportunities are limited.
If you are undecided about which position you may wish to work and/or train for, we suggest you visit the following website for job descriptions http://www.skillset.org/film/jobs/.
To register your interest in working in the film industry please fill up this form. This form is shared with other friendly service providers or associates of the PCP but you should also make direct personal introductions to other film service providers. You should also frequently visit our facebook page to read about opportunities. Lately the Malta Film Commission is organising training seminars which are inexpensive and can be very worthwhile.
Please note we strictly do not administer applications by phone. Interviews are held only when a project is in the pipeline and when there are vacancies.
After working as a trainee, depending on your performance, you may be offered to work as a Production Assistant where your responsibilities and experience will increase substantially. Once you have achieved enough experience as a production assistant on at least two or three productions you may be ready to move a step up the ladder to a higher position.
Trainees usually get paid little or no money. In most countries trainees are not paid for their gaining of experience but they are of course still expected to work hard and to be very proactive. Sometimes we manage to place trainees as a driver in the transport department, in which case a salary would be applicable. This is typically between 65 and 75 Euros a day for a 13 or 14 hour day.
The salary earned by Production Assistants usually ranges between 70 to 85 Euros a day depending on your level of experience and/or the department you are assigned to. Wages mainly depend on experience, performance and the budget of the film. Every film is different!
